Oscar G. Russell
Oscar and Reba Russell Oscar G. Russell, Jr. was born in Pope County, Arkansas, near Russellville. His parents moved to near North Little Rock when he was two years old and he grew up in Pulaski County. He was the oldest of three children, two boys and a girl. He graduated from North Little Rock High school and entered the workforce immediately. His first job was with the Gus Blass Co., a large department store in downtown Little Rock where he rose from stock clerk to assistant manager of the appliance dept. in five years. After a short stint as an insurance agent, he started a 32 year career with the Federal government; serving with the U. S. Post Office, the Railroad Retirement Board, and the Social Security Administration. He enlisted in the Arkansas Army National Guard in 1948, and after four years rose to the rank of SFC, then obtained his commission as 2nd Lt. He rose steadily through the ranks and retired at the rank of full colonel in 1985. He had served in numerous command and staff positions during his tenure. Russell never stopped adding to his educational credits, although he had to do this in the evenings and on weekends. He is a graduate of numerous military schools and courses leading to qualification in the skills needed to excel in his assignments. He also achieved an academic degree from Pike's Peak University. He married Reba L. Faulk and they recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. They have a son and daughter and three grandsons. They are members of First Assembly of God church in North Little Rock and are active in several ministry opportunities. Mrs. Russell became a registered nurse and was, for many years, head of the St. Francis County Health Dept. She retired as a Nurse Specialist from Arkansas Children's Medical Services. After his career in the federal government ended with retirement, Russell became Executive Director of the National Guard Association of Arkansas, headquartered at Camp Robinson. He served in this capacity for 14 years, retiring in 1999. In 1990, he began the activity of collecting data from the files of the Arkansas Gazette, searching for information about two of his ancestors. This was the catalyst in bringing about the series of volumes which stretch from 1914 to 1929, 1960, and 1990 to 2005. In his working career, Russell served as President of the Forrest City Lions Club, the Forrest City Gideon's Camp, President of the Arkansas Society of Association Executives, President of the National Guard Executive Directors Association.
