Dorsey County's existence by that name was brief: 1873 to 1888. It was named for Senator Stephen W. Dorsey, a Vermont native and Republican, who was elected Senator from Arkansas while much of the state's population was disenfranchised. In 1888, the Arkansas General Assembly renamed the county for President Grover Cleveland, a Democrat. The 1880 federal census is the primary genealogical resource researchers will encounter with the Dorsey County label.
