Newspapers are wonderful sources for genealogists, and this one from Cleburne County is no exception.
The editor, George W. Reed, came to Heber from Mankato, Kansas, bringing with him, The Jacksonian, his newspaper.
He promoted Cleburne County, sending copies of his paper to hundreds of people in northern states,
and it worked! He attracted settlers to an already-booming town. He published news about politics,
religious events, births, deaths, crimes, and ordinary gossip. He promoted the county fair, camp
meetings, medicinal springs, good soil, lovely scenery, and friendly folks. These books contain abstracts of
everything of interest to genealogists, and there are complete name, place, subject indexes. The primary
coverage area of the paper is Cleburne, Van Buren, Independence, and White Counties. If you have folks
here in the time period, check the indexes, and order your copies today.

We can't overstate the value of marriage records. They're helpful in finding your ancestral connections, but they're
also a great resource for finding cousins. Twentieth-century marriage records can help you find your living cousins - you
remember them, don't you? They're the lucky folks who have the family Bible, the family photos, and stories about your
folks. Maybe your branch of the family moved off to Bakersfield and left those important resources in the hands of your
family members who stayed behind. And who are our record keepers? Why, women, of course. And they change their names
when they change men, so marriage records can help you find them. Many people from the hills and hollows of North
Arkansas moved to the "bottoms," that is, rich farming land in Eastern Arkansas like that of Cross County.

Loose Probate Packets 1873-1917
By Desmond Walls Allen, Henryetta Walls Vanaman and Connie Olds Trent
ISBN 0-941765-03-2, 57 pages, $10.00
We got a call from a courthouse employee one day advising us that "old papers" were in the trash dumpster. We rushed to the scene and found the loose probate packets had been left on the floor of a basement vault and soaked when a water pipe broke. Part of the soggy papers had been thrown in the trash, the others were still in the damp boxes. We organized the papers in folders and created this guide which lists names of deceased, administrators, guardians, executors, heirs, and others. (Our mother has almost
forgiven us for drying them out in her microwave oven.)

Doris Evans Dewberry and Jimmie Dewberry are the World's Living Experts on the genealogy of Northwest Johnson County
(and the surrounding area). They've compiled books of census data, marriage records, and newspaper abstracts.
If you're interested in this neck of the woods, you're probably kin to them, or kin to someone who's kin to them.
This book contains inventories of four primary cemeteries: Evans, in a remote section of northern Johnson County near
Spoke Plant; Oark, formerly called Melson, in northwest Johnson County; Patterson Springs, located five miles north of Oark;
and Yale, formerly known as Hills Chapel, five miles west of Oark. In addition, the book contains information about
several abandoned cemeteries in this area. The inventories are well-supplemented with annotations from newspaper
articles and obituaries, memories of relatives, correspondence, marriage records, and other personal information.
The index to the book contains the names of the people buried in the cemeteries. Burial records are current through March 15, 2002. If your folks are here, you definitely want this invaluable resource.

ISBN 1-56546-072-3, 305 pages, $28.00
These books are extremely helpful to researchers interested in Johnson County who find it inconvenient or difficult to use the microfilmed census schedules. This transcription lists most of the information found in the census records themselves: full names, relationships, ages, birthplaces, occupations, and reported birthplaces of parents. While there is a microfilmed Soundex index that includes Johnson County in 1880, it only includes families with children aged 10 and under. This transcription for 1880, on the other hand, includes a surname index to everyone in the county.

Compiled by Jimmie Dewberry
ISBN 1-56546-107-X, 440 pages, $45.00

Early Lawrence County, Arkansas,
Records, 1817-1830
By Marion Stark Craig
ISBN 1-56546-071-5, 52 pages, $15.00
Great news for researchers interested in northern Arkansas in territorial times: this book contains a full transcription of Lawrence County, Arkansas, Circuit Court Records, 1818-1830, and abstracts from Lawrence County Deed Book B, 1817-1825. The Circuit Court records include the Court of Common Pleas records (1821), which existed for a short time in Arkansas. All these records can be very helpful to genealogists--even minute details can add color to an ancestor's life. (The records show one man's apology to a woman about whom he had made slanderous remarks.) Seemingly mundane court matters at least show the person was alive at a particular time. Land records are very important in tracing family lines--often marriages are implied and family relationships are mentioned. Lawrence County was formed January 15, 1815, as part of Missouri Territory. It included most of the northern part of what is now Arkansas. The first post office in Arkansas was established at Davidsonville, the first seat of Lawrence County, on June 28, 1817. Parts of Lawrence County went to form Independence County in 1820, Greene County in 1833, Randolph County in 1835, and Sharp County in 1868.

It contains a transcription of the information just as found in the original records and a full-name index to the material.

ISBN 1-56546-098-7, 70 pages, $15.00
[View a surname index to the book]
In 1990, as a volunteer at the Arkansas History Commission, Dr. Marion Stark Craig abstracted the loose packets of probate papers for Montgomery County, covering the time period 1842-1930. This volume contains an edited, typeset, and indexed version of Dr. Craig's manuscript. Probate court has jurisdiction over the handling of wills, grants of letters of administration, and supervision of the management and settlement of estates of deceased people and some other folks who were unable to care for their own affairs. Summaries of the probate court's decisions are kept in minutes books, large volumes in which clerks noted matters brought before the court. The meat of the material, however, was filed in packets of loose papers. These have been microfilmed for Montgomery County and this volume describes how to get copies of these case file packets.
