Did your grandfather serve in World War I? Your family history won't be complete without information about his military service. He may only have been called up and sent to a training camp before the war ended in 1918, but his willingness to serve and his experience are important.

Don't forget those collateral relatives (relatives like great-uncles and your grandpa's cousins who aren't in your direct genealogical line). Those far-flung uncles and cousins are part of your family, too, and you may find they served in the military. Why are you interested in them? Because they may lead you to a place where your non-military folks lived, got married, did business, had babies, bought land, paid taxes, died, and were buried. So don't overlook any records about all members of your extended family. Clues! More clues!

Dr. John L. Ferguson, former Director of the Arkansas History Commission, directed us to a little-known, seldom-used card file containing the discharge records of our Arkansas soldiers. (Don't confuse this with the draft registration; it's a different animal.) Arkansas Research, Inc. is proud to announce publication of this series of 32 books by Desmond Walls Allen listing our Arkansas World War I soldiers. Information about each soldier includes:

  • full name
  • army serial number (essential for getting more information)
  • race
  • residence city and county
  • date and place he entered service
  • whether he was an officer
  • his age in years and months or date of birth
  • town and state (or foreign city and country) of his birth
  • and notes
