Gandrud compiled most of her research findings into 245 volumes, published as the series, Alabama Records. She kept a separate body of research notes in forty-five loose-leaf binders, and those contained information about Alabama's soldiers; those who participated in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and various Indian wars. Roughly in alphabetical order by the last names of the soldiers, the notes generally cataloged the service, pension, residence, family, and descendants of the soldiers or a mixture thereof when the information was available. Many of the files contain only a page or two, usually with a notation about military service and something about Alabama residency. One file, however, is eighty-eight pages long. The material in the file isn't necessarily just about the soldier - it may contain detailed family information on several collateral lines.
Beginning in 1975, Bobbie Jones McLane (no relation to Pauline Jones Gandrud) of Hot Springs worked with Gandrud and started compiling and publishing books in the Alabama Soldiers series, based on the material Gandrud had collected over the decades. When Gandrud died in 1980, Bobbie, a long-time friend and correspondent of Gandrud, went to Tuscaloosa and met with Gandrud's son, who gave Bobbie the rest of the Alabama soldiers notebooks and his permission to publish them as she wished. Bobbie transcribed and published twenty-one volumes from the notebooks, covering surnames A through O. After the first volume in 1975, she published subsequent books through the years until she completed volume twenty-one, covering N through O in 2001. That was five years ago, and when I (Desmond Walls Allen) recently talked to Bobbie about her plans to complete the project, she turned the entire project, manuscript collection and published material, over to me for completion.
When I brought the manuscript collection home from Hot Springs, my intention was to continue what Bobbie McLane had done with it: transcribe Gandrud's notes and publish books. The information in the collection was absolutely too good to let it languish, unseen and unused. It didn't take me very long, however, to see why it had taken Bobbie twenty-five years to get two-thirds of the way through.
So instead of looking at this project in terms of books, I started to think about it in terms of individual soldier files and how to make them accessible to researchers. Having walked in on the project in mid-stream, I had two basic groups of materials: (1) the books Bobbie had already transcribed, and (2) the raw files still in binders.
My solution was to scan (with a high-speed scanner) the books Bobbie had already completed. I made a list of the soldiers who were the subject of each file. You can see the lists in the links beside each book title below. But most individual researchers don't want to buy a whole book when all they need is the information about one or two men. So I'm offering that information for sale in the form of electronic files (or printed paper copies if preferred). For the second part of the collection materials, I made PDF (Portable Document Format) files of the remainder of the soldiers' files for surnames P - Z.
